The following is an excerpt from Once Upon a Time:

​That spring, Carolyn and John made two moves indicative of their commitment.  First, they bought a black-and-white Canaan dog from breeder Donna Dodson, who owned Pleasant Hill Farms in Kingston, Illinois.  David Golden, a Canaan breeder in Virginia, explained that Dodson told him "They clearly researched Canaans, because as John said, they were 'intelligent and independent.'"  Golden said Dodson laughed when recalling that "Carolyn was the one that really wanted a dog.  I had several phone calls with them, including one where Carolyn kept me on the phone forever, discussing the necessity of training both the dog and the people."
